A Look at VPlay on Microsoft Surface

Stuart Taylor is a researcher at MSR Cambridge and in his spare time he likes to mix bits as a VJ. He created an application called VPlay that allows him to mix video on a Surface like you would records on a DJ turntable. He stopped by the Channel 9 studio on his way to dinner last week and took a few minutes to show us how VPlay works. You can see more about the project here.

This May Be Your Next Mouse

Today at the User Interface Software and Technology Conference, Microsoft will show five new mouse prototypes that combine normal mousing with multitouch controls. Here is a video that gives you a brief introduction to each of the controls. I'll be meeting with this team when they get back, what questions do you have about these new mice? Which one is your most/least favorite?

The Labs of Microsoft Hardware 6 of 6

You may have heard that Microsoft recently expanded the campus a little, one of the teams that had grown out of their space was Microsoft Hardware. The hardware team invited me over to see The Labs of Microsoft Hardware and check out the process behind creating and testing products like the Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 and the Lifecam Cinema HD. We end our look at the Labs of Microsoft Hardware by looking at one of the coolest rooms I've ever been in. It is the anechoic chamber in the Audio Lab. Now, I knew going in that this was going to be a quiet room. But I had no idea just how quiet. Even when you have the best soundproofing on your head, you're still subjected to vibrations through your entire body. This room is even vibration-proof. The results are almost scary, leaving you with a feeling that you've just disconnected from the world.

The hardware team invited me over to see The Labs of Microsoft Hardware and check out the process behind creating and testing products like the Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 and the Lifecam Cinema HD. Today we look at the Reliability Lab, where more devastation is rained upon Microsoft products than at a WWDC parking lot. Cables are pulled, stains are applied, even a fake Sun is cast upon our plastic, all in an effort to give you products that can take abuse with the best of them. See all previous videos here.

Over the coming days you'll see the Mouse Testing Lab, the Model Shop (with all the really cool upcoming stuff hidden, sorry), the Wireless Lab, the Video Lab, the Reliability Lab, and the Acoustic Lab. Today's lab is the Wireless Lab, where Faraday cages are used to test the noise and interference of wireless products to make sure they play nice with all the other gadgets in your house.

Behind the PDC 3D Video - A How-To

As promised I give you a quick walk-through of how we did the PDC Countdown video in 3D. Hardware used included a pair of Flip Ultra HD cameras, a bracket and connector, and an affordable little tripod -- Total cost: $340. The software I use is Stereo Movie Maker, which is freeware and can be downloaded here. Let us know if you'd like to see more content in 3D (probably in addition to 2D video rather than instead of). And post a link in the coffeehouse if you end up doing some of your own.

The Importance of Gabriola

If you've poked around your fonts list in Windows 7, you might have come across a display font called Gabriola. What you may not have known is that this font is an important first step in some additions to Windows. Gabriola is an OpenType font that includes significant flourishes that push the boundries of vertical space, display logic, and Cleartype. The lessons learned from Gabriola, coupled with YDirection Antialiasing in Windows 7 Cleartype, will help Microsoft create a better reading experience with other fonts like Arabic. Geraldine Wade from the Cleartype Advanced Reading Technologies team walked us through a look at what makes Gabriola different from other fonts in Windows, how it lights up in Blend, and to talk about what this means for font designers going forward.

Earlier this week the Office team released a video that showed some of the new features of PowerPoint 2010, part of the Office 2010 suite. The latest version is hardware-accelerated with new transitions and animations. All of this means that you can better use PowerPoint to not just present bullet points or graphs, but to really tell your story. Here is that video, all of which was done with PowerPoint 2010.

Anandan Talks About Digital Heritage Project

P. Anandan, who leads Microsoft Research in India, stopped by to show us a project they worked on called the India Digital Heritage Project. This was a very cool attempt to recreate the experience of visiting historic sites around India through the combined use of Photosynth, HD View, video, and ambient sound. While much of the presentation is 'on rails' like a theme park tour, just like with World Wide Telescope you can stop the tour at any time and wander off clicking and zooming and looking at the sites, and then click to jump right back into the tour. It's a very interesting example of what's possible with tools available today.

Meet Doug Hauger, Azure General Manager. Doug owns the business side of the Azure Platform equation. How was the pricing determined? Are there different plans for "garage innovators" versus large enterprise customers? What does it all really mean? Would we be able to finish the converstion in under 15 minutes (hard for me to do, as you know...:))? Of course, the complexity of the Azure business model would determine the time it takes to explain it (and the thinking behind it). Well, as you can see by the length of the interview, apparently the Azure people constructed a pricing model that is greatly simplified compared to some of our other business pricing models from years past. The overall simplicity of the plan is impressive. Tune in.
Defrag is a new series Nic Fillingham and I will be bringing you to look into murky subjects that need sorted out. We'll put the bits in order and tell you exactly what the story is. In this episode we look at multitouch in Windows 7. What are all the multitouch gestures? Will there be more? What is Microsoft's thinking behind multitouch? How/when will I see multitouch on my desktop? We'll answer all these and more. Please take a moment to tell us what other subjects you'd like to see 'defragged' in future episodes.

Software Transactional Memory is no longer a pipe dream or the stuff of academics. STM.NET, as it's called, is ready for your experimentation . The goal of STM.NET is to be able to exploit concurrency by using components written by experts and consumed by application programmers who can then compose together these components using STM. Transactional memory provides an easy-to-use mechanism to do this safely. STM.NET is of course not a concurrency silver bullet and this is an experimental rrelease of the .NET Framework that allows C# programmers to try out this technology, specifically a particular implementation of STM. The STM team really needs your feedback to understand if they're doing the right things to meet your needs. Traditionally, using STM for simple trasactional tasks didn't make sense. The overhead was too high. Is this still the case? What needed to change in the .NET Framework to enable STM.NET? Tune in, meet the team and get a good sense of what this very small team has accomplished with STM.NET and learn about some of the paths taken to get there. This represents really great engineering. Congratulations to the STM team! Now, Niners, go get the bits! Enjoy.</itunes:subtitle>

I sat down with Chris Pratley, GM of OfficeLabs to find out how this unique division of Microsoft came about and why. He also gave us some inside scoop on how things work at OfficeLabs, some stuff they have up their sleeves and, of course, how you can get involved. In Visual Studio Team System 2010, Microsoft made this area of the product extensible in order to support 3rd party databases. Quest Software is hard at work on a database schema provider to support Oracle database development from within Visual Studio Team System 2010. In this 10-4 episode I sat down with Daniel Norwood of Quest Software to get an early look at "Project Fuze."
Defrag: Windows 7 Multitouch

Defrag is a new series Nic Fillingham and I will be bringing you to look into murky subjects that need sorted out. We'll put the bits in order and tell you exactly what the story is. In this episode we look at multitouch in Windows 7. What are all the multitouch gestures? Will there be more? What is Microsoft's thinking behind multitouch? How/when will I see multitouch on my desktop? We'll answer all these and more. Please take a moment to tell us what other subjects you'd like to see 'defragged' in future episodes.

One of the central engineering and design themes of Windows 7 is efficiency: efficiency in user experience (things work as and when expected, reliably), efficiency in processing, execution, diagnostics, performance, scheduling, window managment, graphics, desktop search, etc. Well, not surprisingly, Windows 7's audio system has been engineered to provide very efficient user experience (when you plug your headphones in the system streams music to your headphones as expected. When you remove them Windows will switch the stream to flow into your speakers - this is known as real time stream switching - but how does it work, exactly?). Here, Architect Elliot H Omiya, Principal Software Developer Larry Osterman and Principal Software Developer Frank Yerrace take us through the details of Windows 7 audio, including some history, some design decisions, some hard problems and overall a great conversation about how Windows makes noise (or music - it's all relative :)). Enjoy. Lots to learn here. Elliot, Larry, Frank and the Windows audio team have done excellent work in this iteration of Windows. Find some time (I know. It's hard.) Get comfortable and learn all about the innerworkings of Windows 7's audio.</itunes:subtitle>

So, when you click on something (an icon, a folder name, etc...), how long does it take for the user to receive an expected reaction from the system? What are the bottlenecks that lead to a poor experience (user-observable latency) when using some feature in Windows? Is the root problem in the design of the feature itself or with the underlying OS? Enter PerfTrack.
My role at Microsoft changed slightly this morning. I've got from being a dude on a team to being a dude with a team. I'm not sure if it's a big change or a medium change. There's no sack of money, although I think they put "Lead" at the end of my title and I get a copy of Halo 4*. I wasn't sure if this would be a big deal or not, so I figured I'd ask a guy I respect a great deal, Chris Sells. Chris is a guy who has been in the community for years and is well though of. He gets lots done so I figured I'd ask him how my life will change by managing a team. Here's what he had to say, over lunch at the food court. (Note that Chris and I are both remote and live in Oregon, so that's ANOTHER reason I wanted to talk to him.) * not really.

Arun Kishan: Inside Windows 7 - Farewell to the Windows Kernel Dispatcher Lock

You've learned about many of the new features of the latest version of the Windows kernel in the Mark Russinovich Inside Windows 7 conversation here on Channel 9. One of Mark’s favorite kernel innovations is the way the Windows 7 kernel manages scheduling of threads and the underlying synchronization primitives that embody kernel thread management. Prior to Windows 7 (and therefore Windows Server 2008 R2) the Windows kernel dispatcher employed a single lock, the dispatcher lock, which worked well for a relatively small numbers of processors (like 64). However, now that we find ourselves in the midst of the ManyCore era, well, 64 processors aren’t that many... A new strategy was required to scale Windows to large numbers of processors since a single lock is limited in capability, by design: The masterful David Cutler, one of the world's greatest software engineers, wrote the NT scheduler in a time when the notion of affordable 256-processor machines was more science fiction than prob...

In order to promote further scalability of the NT kernel, Arun completely eliminated the dispatcher lock and replaced it with a much finer grained set of synchronization primitives. Gone are the days of contention for a single spinlock. How did Arun pull this off, exactly, you ask? Who is this genius? Well, tune in. Lots of answers await… Arun's work directly benefits the overall performance of Windows running on many processors and means, simply, Windows can now really scale. Thank you, Arun! Spinlocks are synchronization primitives that cause a processor to busy-wait until the state of the lock’s memory location changes. As the name implies, the dispatcher lock is the fundamental lock associated with the kernel dispatcher, or the scheduler. </itunes:subtitle>

Windows Animation - Advanced Topics

Smooth animations are fundamental to many graphical UI applications. Windows 7 introduces a native animation framework for managing the scheduling and execution of animations. The animation framework supplies a library of useful mathematical functions for specifying behavior over time and lets developers provide their own behavior functions. The framework supports sophisticated resolution of conflicts when multiple animations attempt to manipulate the same value simultaneously. An application can specify that one animation must be completed before another can begin and can force completion within a set time. The new framework also helps animations determine appropriate durations. You are welcome to join the Paul(s), both Paul Kwiatkowski and Paul Gildea, as they dive deep (real deep) in to some of the advanced topics of the Windows Animation Manager. This is the third video in a series of videos about the Windows Animation Manager. The first two videos are: Windows Scenic Animation ...

It allows you to tweet, read tweets, automatically tweet your acheivements, and even post screenshots through TwitPic. The app can be downloaded by going to http://c9.ms/TweetCraft/. You can also read the FAQ here, the Getting Started Guide, or read how TweetCraft works. Dan even had a video made, which you can watch here (left).

More about the Search Summit Words from a Search Engine Expert
